<img src="http://electronicmusicbears.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1179029/0x0_2401870.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />Various Electronic Dance

Matthew Mercer - Portland, Oregon

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=9275568582&ref=ts
http://www.mattmercer.com
http://www.microfilmmusic.com
http://fairtilizer.com/users/matthewmercer
http://soundcloud.com/mercerm

Matthew Mercer has been producing electronic music for the last 10+ years under his own name, the alias Systm and as one half of electro-pop duo Microfilm. His music ranges from complete abstraction to bright pop tracks. Records for Christian Morgenstern's Forte label and Neutonmusic were focused around techy, glitchy, cut-up sounds, apt for the dancefloor as much as for at-home listening; solo offerings through his own digital Fiche imprint are more varied.

As one half of Microfilm, Matt has helped push the duo forward with their own signature style of pop hooks, glitchy breakdowns and cross-genre idiosyncrasies. He's also completed remixes (both official and unofficial) for artists such as Mathias Schaffhäuser, Codec & Flexor, Ladytron, Radiohead, Peroxide Mocha and more.

As a DJ, Matt is versatile, working with both traditional vinyl and digital sets, the latter of which are sometimes less predictable and tend to combine different styles and genres.

EMB 29 - DJ Martin Fry

<img src="http://electronicmusicbears.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1179029/0x0_2364690.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />Deep House

DJ Martin Fry - Atlanta, Georgia

http://www.facebook.com/DJMartinFry
http://www.DJMartinFry.com

Martin Fry first heard house music in 1988, bought his first equipment in 1990, and started producing in 2000. Collaborations with Ralphi Rosario cemented his credentials, with tracks being signed to top selling compilations from DJs Abel and David Knapp.

Martin's style is dark and progressive synths with tribal percussion, but he's very comfortable adapting to the crowd and situation. For instance, Atlanta Pride 2009 saw Martin headlining the opening party, an intimate club gig, and an afterhours all in one weekend. Each gig was uniquely special.

Martin draws inspiration from, appreciates, and understands a wide range of styles. And this set is absolute proof.

Dj Saifir - Portland, Oregon

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=734462329
http://www.myspace.com/thrasherqawwal
http://www.myspace.com/trmellors

1980: Todd Mellors (saifir) was an only child growing up in a middle class neighborhood of Los Angeles (Venice/Mar Vista). He began his experimental music with some old PBX telephone systems that his father pillaged from the GTE bone yard; in conjunction with a Casio MT-40 synth, a dusted 2 speed reel to reel, and several tape decks (boom boxes) for room multi tracking. Parsing though his folks 78 and 8 track collections, Todd found some interesting material to manipulate and work with.

1983-89: Many punk bands, including The Runs (87-89) that ended up on the Farwell to Venice compilation years later (2005?)

1989: Todd moved up to San Jose, CA. Not knowing a soul, he discovered a college radio station KFJC 89.7 F.M. This ended up being the doorway to new friends, project partners, and fresh new ideas. Coming from the L.A. punk scene/speed metal (circa 83-89), Todd played drums for a few local San Jose bands that never got any official gigs except a few backyard parties. Wanting something new...In 1991 Todd met Gustavo Lanzas. They started a DJ duo know as Team 2000: T2K. They played ambient DJ mixes along side knobs, faders, and analog synths at Raves and other all night parties. After a while the Rave scene dwindled and the duo stopped working together.

Todd continued working, but under his solo moniker saifir.

In 1993 Todd went back to college: It was there were he met Gustavo Pastre (aka Symplx) of Big City Orchestra. The two really hit things off creatively and started to work on experimental/noise together. From circuit bent toys, rewired fx, tape loops, and half broken synths, found sound, DIY. Todd and Gustavo recorded a whole shoe box full of cassette tapes, including the summer stint on the Pilar of Plastic Radio Access, KZSU 90.1 F.M. Stanford University. Most of these recordings are still in the shoe box waiting to be digitized

All this time of music/noise projects, from 1992-2002 Todd was a DJ on the side. He didn’t promote his self for gigs. He had a day job. DJ-ing for Todd was kind of a side project and a networking gateway.

In 1998 Todd meets Mark Camp (Astronout). The two worked together around sillion valley at various companies including Digidesign and Apple Computer. Mark and Todd are known as Saifirnout: A combination of both of their monikers. They have played various venues like the infamous DNA lounge in San Francisco, to private parties up in Grass Valley. Saifirnout released a single on a Max Music compilation titled Cal Drum and Bass. Mark and Todd still work together on occasion.

During Todd's employment at Digidesign (98-2004) he met Larry Thrasher of Psychic TV, joining his Qawwali group knows as Thrasher Qawwal and Party. Todd and Larry continue their Qawwali-esque projects, mixing ambient/noise elements among other things. The duo are know as Lone Star Mystique: spaghetti western dub cooked up Qawwali style.

Tired of the high priced rent in the bay area Todd has recently relocated to the pacific north west in the cool and eclectic city of Portland. He continues to work solo making music, playing DJ gigs and remotely with good friend Xambuca.

EMB 22 - Dj Max

Dj Max - Rochester, NY

http://www.myspace.com/djmax
http://www.musictechcapstone.neu.edu/2009/birnbaum.html
http://www.bear411.com/djmax
http://www.woofphilly.com

Being born and raised in Ithaca, NY, DJ Max has always thought outside the box. This is most evident by his forward thinking song selections in his DJ sets and original compositions. While some may play the current big room hits and standard classics, DJ Max always brings about a new, yet familiar sound to his dancefloors, twisting them with his progressive house beats.

Starting in `99, DJ Max began his first residency at Angles in Elmira, NY; quickly becoming the head music and lighting technician four nights a week at the club. After fine tuning his skills over the next year, he then decided to bring his sound to the rave and club scenes around the state, giving him more freedom of expression with his music. At this time, vinyl was still the predominant medium for club DJs, which began his obsession with his extensive record collection which he still builds upon today.

In 2003, Rochester, NY became the place that DJ Max called home, as he began his collegiate studies at MCC, majoring in Music Production & Engineering. Over the following two years, he met up with producer/DJ Chester Wong from Toronto, ON and helped to form the production team known as The Mentalists. Their remix of Simone Denny’s “Cliché” helped the single climb to #4 on the Billboard Dance/Clubplay charts in October of 2005. Not only was the remix a great success, but it also helped launch DJ Max’s sound into the Toronto nightlife scene, affording him the opportunity to play at Spearhead’s Fantasy Ball both in 2005 and ’06. In addition to his Fantasy Ball sets, DJ Max got to perform in front of 5,000 attendees at Folsom Fair North at the Recon main stage party.

The Grinding Bears production crew was started shortly thereafter, with DJ Max being one of the founding members and resident DJs. Their parties in Rochester, NY helped bring a new and refreshing sound to hundreds of hairy homos every month.

After finishing his associates degree, DJ Max moved to Boston in 2006 to attend Northeastern University, where he obtained his bachelors degree in Music Technology in 2009, graduating Summa Cum Laude. The pursuit of his higher education has always been about bringing a fresher and more unique sound to his audiences.

In 2008, DJ Max became affiliated with the WOOF Philly promotional team and had the pleasure of playing in the city of brotherly love, working with the likes of Barney Medunic and Max Scott.

DJ Max’s new mix, “Stimulate” hopes to do just that; stimulate your senses, your mind, your ears, and your soul. This 77 minute journey should be best enjoyed either on your way to the club, getting ready in your new leathers, or after an evening of pumping music at the club; not wanting the night to end. Enjoy!

Dj Billy Pfeiffer - New York

It's been awhile since i've done any mixing, but all of these tracks were overdue to be mixed up and passed on at some point, ideally when the sun is still low in the sky and there's still half a bottle open. hope these beats find you cali boys in a good place. daddy sends hugs.

Billy began dj'ing in his native Chicago during the initial heyday of house in the mid 1980's and has had a multitude of gigs, residencies in Chicago and New York (and 2 radio shows -WNUR-Street Beat, and WNYU-Ride the Night) - all places where tempo and genre changes filled in the late hazy hours.

Bill's love of r&b and jazz (global 33 'jazz flights' thursdays - NYC) and deep chunky house (starlight 'supreme funk parlour' saturdays - NYC) come out in the wash in this mix, although he is enjoying his retirement from dj'ing, billy still releases a track or two on his all white label "urban gardens incorporated"

Tracklist:

Shane Pfannenstiel, a.k.a. DJ Shane Stiel has had music in his blood from the day he was born. Growing up in Colorado his whole life, Shane's initial musical development was stimulated by hip-hop, 80's, hard rock, and finally, electronic music. He attended several club and all night events, where he became more familiar with the vibe of the scene and inspired by artists such as Seb Fontaine and Judge Jules. His DJ career then blossomed at the end of the 20th, when he became addicted to rocking crowds. His first gig with ColoradoRave.com at a 4:20 festival surely opened his eyes; enough to become their top resident. Soon after he started with ColoradoRave.com he continued on with a friend and promoter Ryan Dykstra. Ryan's long running successful night at Club Pure gave Shane a chance to meet and befriend several well-known talents, such as Kimball Collins, George Acosta, Guy Ornadel, and Jon Bishop to name a few. Hard work and determination landed him time aside many major world-wide headliners. His big break came when he opened for George Acosta for about 1200 people, sealing his name into the Denver nightlife scene. Traxx 2000, Club Matrixx and other local venues would help him gain the respect as one of Colorado's best Trance DJs, a local headliner. Since then he has performed with such talent as Tiesto, Crystal Method, Digital Asassins, Taylor, George Acosta, DRC, Disco-D, DJ Mea, DJ Brian, DJ Brad, Kimball Collins, Sandra Collins, Anne Savage, Nigel Richards, Viscous Vic, Mars and Mystre, Ida Corr, Flava, and many more. "When I perform, I am not performing for stardom or anything of that nature. I am delivering my vibe to my listeners and fans. It is a time for me to release and the people around me to take in how I feel. I believe that one can only achieve this by doing something they love and sharing what they love with those around them. Electronic music is what I love, and I will share that with everyone" - Shane Stiel. Soon after living in Colorado and making a name for him there, Shane joined the Navy, and unfortunately, took a break from performing. He then ened up in San Diego, CA, where he has befriended several well known producer, DJ's, and promoters. They inspired him to get back in to doing what he loves the most. His recent performances at Richs', Club Montage, and Urban Mo's, in San Diego, wowed the crowd, and definitely has put his foot in the door. Look for this guy in the near future, he will definitely make a good impression on dance music lover's around the world.

Luke Williams - San Francisco

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=602601090&ref=ts

Hi, my name is Luke Williams and I'm kind of important. I took time out of my busy schedule, chartered a helicopter, and flew over to the studio to create this elaborate mix for your refined palate. And anyone who knows me, knows those first two lines are complete bullshit. I'm just a regular guy with a great love of music. I grew up in Washington State, but made the move from Seattle to the city that is now my home, San Francisco a year and a half ago. About ten years ago, I started appreciating and exploring electronic sounds. After 16 years amidst the hubbub and chatter of commercial music, I had grown tired of the same thing over and over again. Like most people, I assume, I first heard things like Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Crystal Method and Fat Boy Slim on the radio. I started paying attention to my cravings and began digging online for music, since there was not a station that I could get that played electronic music regularly. Then I found BBC Radio 1. I was in love. Music has always moved me, but not like this. After a few years of delving deep into the House genre, I started listening heavily to Trance. Then Drum and Bass, then Dubstep, Breaks, and on to Electro House and so on. One day about two years ago after downloading a ton of new music, I heard a track by Justin Martin called The Fugitive. It spun my ears in a circle and made me want to look at more of his tracks. And so there began a new addiction to Tech-House and Minimal. After hearing Electro House in all it's busyness, it was refreshing to hear music that was pure and simple, yet intricate. The build ups aren't ground into your skull, they're something you have to acclimate and pay attention to in order to notice and appreciate. That is where I am today. I remain interested in all the aforementioned genres and will always will be, but for now, I'd like to share with you a mix I hope you will enjoy in the context of where I am at this moment in my musical exploration.

Love, Hugs and I hope you enjoy!!!

Astronout - Pacifica, CA

http://www.facebook.com/mark.camp
http://www.myspace.com/astronout
http://www.soundcloud.com/astronout

Mark Camp (Astronout) has been producing an array of eclectic electronic music since 1984.

It started in his early days of High School. Performing at various venues in the south bay, Mark and a group of friends started a pop synth band that covered songs by OMD, Human League, and Depeche Mode.

Mark attended College where he studied music technology and discovered the endless possibilities of MIDI and Digital Audio. Gaining a reputable following in San Jose, Mark was producing industrial music (late 80’s) with a band called Factor One.

In 1991, looking for something new, Mark and a friend attended several legendary parties in San Francisco and discovered house music, techno, and ambient music. Suddenly with synths, a laptop, and piles of FX, Mark was getting booked in Ambient rooms making a name for himself and gaining respect for his obscure ambient soundscapes: Astronout was born!

Mark released his first Astronout 12” with then band mate Keith Krate. A two track ambient white label that is still in demand. Astronout music continued to grow as Mark collaborated with friends including legendary San Jose DJ, Dj Spun and Courtney Nielsen of Central Fire. The trio started EAC Records for the purpose of releasing their own music. Other releases include a 12” on Om recording artists Soulstice’s BCE Records, and tracks on various compilation cd’s including “Cali Drum and Bass” out on Max Music with friend Todd Mellors (saifir), and a track on the “Off The Streets” compilation on Ultraviolet Records. Mark has also worked with another popular San Jose DJ, Rick Preston, together producing some house tracks for various labels including Viva! And After Hours Records. Mark also has a guest spot on Smash Mouth’s Astro Lounge on Interscope Records.

Today you can find Astronout playing everywhere from posh art gallery openings, to glamorous lounges in and about San Francisco.

In 1993 I was signed to Silent/Flask records where I appeared on a many comps and produced my first full-length release, "Logarithmic" under the moniker Dreams Without Number. "Logarithmic" ended up on radio charts next to artists such as the Orb and Orbital.

Throughout the 90s I was heavily involved in the SF rave scene and played live and DJd serveraI ambient rooms. I was the first electronic act to play live at Cafe Du Nord in San Francisco.

My final release was in 1999 under my original name, Dabecy. The track was called Autacoid and was released on Solid Trax Records. Listen to a sample here -

Ten years later In January of 2009 I launched Electronic Music Bears throwing myself head first back into the SF music/club scene.

Future plans include original compositions and an Electronic Music Bears club night.

It's been over 10 years since I've put together a dance oriented mix. I hope you enjoy it.

Courtney Nielsen has been an electronic musician for about 20 years, and a DJ for 10. He cut his teeth during the San Francisco rave scene in projects and bands such as Central Fire and Electronic Artists Collective. He disappeared from the scene around 2001 but continued to write and compose and DJ from home base. He's currently peeking out from under his rock and checking things out again. He likes Taco Tuesdays at the Triple Crown, and especially likes their Mushroom Taco, paired with a Sierra Nevada. Courtney often gets confused with another tall Courtney from the Bay Area, although they've never met personally, but he finds it entertaining to have a doppelgänger.

Wyrm - North Carolina

http://www.myspace.com/allanzane

WYRM is the current project of Allan Zane. WYRM arose from the ashes of the now-defunct project Arcanum. Arcanum’s only outputs were a private-edition cassette and CD-R. The moniker WYRM was decided upon when Allan Zane discovered that there were at least two other projects out there named Arcanum—however, this did little in regards to the style of the music… Using whatever technology is at hand at any given moment, WYRM constructs aural amalgamations of genres now often referred to as “dark ambient” and experimental “electronica”. Often the end results are as equally repulsive as they are intriguing. Expressed through music, WYRM’s fascination lies with the shadow aspects of human existence—yet constitutes virtue, consciousness-expansion, and illumination.

The first incarnation of WYRM was a live performance at the Mercury-Free Retrograde 9/23/00 event at Vincent’s Ear in Asheville, NC. Some other acts performing that night were Sword Volcano Complex featuring Karl Blake (with whom Allan Zane also collaborates), 11:11, and Sinister Senile. Despite some technical difficulties, WYRM’s partially improvised performance was surprisingly well received and later released as three separate private-edition CD-R’s on their own DIS’S pFIFA label. Since this first incarnation, the WYRM line-up has evolved. The current members are Allan Zane and Liz Lang. Future WYRM releases include collaborations with Rapoon and Nocturnal Emissions…as well as remixed/remastered unreleased versions of 2 Psychic TV songs for a forthcoming deluxe edition of 'Dreams Less Sweet'.

Paul Tuffcub Ledbury - London,UK

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=765645326
http://www.tuffcub.com

This is going to be terribly vague 'cos frankly I've never even tried to make it as a DJ or producer (apart from once) and fate seems to have landed me on my feet to meet all the right people. Go figure.

I got interested in dance music whilst at University and started emailing a guy called Ian Smith who worked at Media records in London, home to my favorite dance act at the time, Clock. Stop laughing at the back. Ian was also resident DJ at Heaven at the time. I think Ian saved me a hell of a lot of time and trouble in the future as he told me what really happens in the music behind the scenes - i.e. it’s bloody hard to make a living out of it, so I've always made sure my proper job comes first.

Around 1994 I moved down to London and started going to legendary club "Trade” and met the also legendary Diddy (who is on this list - Hello dear!) and that was the start of many years spending a good part of the weekend in a basement in Clerkenwell dancing my ass off. About now I had started writing the odd tune and actually did a remix of one of Dids' tunes which came out on those old fashioned circular black thingies.

Somewhere along the line I met my very good friends Ed Real & BK who were running a club called Riot! I'm not exactly sure how but I ended up as part of the Riot team, and eight years later I still am being general dogs body/ webmonkey.

Also during this period I met (and dated for a bit) Mr. Harry Hard, now part of the remix team "Friday Night Posse" based at top UK cheesemeister label, All Around The World.

I remixed one of Harrys' tunes "Cruising" which he about me (ahem) after I took him to Trade. I had started Djing by now and was doing the odd set here and there, mostly at after hours hard dance night "Milk" - this also lead to a remix of one of their tracks coming out.

About five years ago I decided that I had enough of hanging about on the sidelines and set myself the goal of getting in the UK dance charts within a year. I had an idea for a track so teamed up with my mate Tomo we wrote track called "Ace!", a hard trance track with rock guitars which were actually played by a mate who I went to school with!

I sent it over to Ed Real who was then label manager at Nukleuz records. Ed didn’t like it.. but the head honcho did so one evening I got call the track was signed. A few months later, there it was in the UK Dance. Job done. A month or so later I found out the track had been licensed to the compilation album "Hot Import Nights" in the US and it was on a couple of other compilations as well. To date only one person, some guy in Australia who reviewed the tune, has noticed the guitar riff sounds suspiciously like the one from Motorhead’s “Ace Of Spades” even though we signposted it with the track name.

And that was that. My “day” job suddenly took a lot more time and I met my lovely hubby. I stopped going clubbing and Ding but still did the odd track just for my own pleasure...

Until about four weeks ago when we held one last Riot! event at "The End". The End was closing down so had invited all the old crew back for one last party, so I dug out the tunes and played a set. And that was that. Again. The End had closed, Trade is long gone, I've had my desired Dance chart placing, bye bye clubbing, it's been fun. .

At least I thought so, until literally just this afternoon I got call and I'm now playing at arguably the most famous club in the world, Ministry Of Sound, on April the 12th.

God knows what's going to happen next, I'll become Pope or something equally bizarre.

The mix is a hotch potch of Riot! Classics, including a couple of tracks from the Riot! label, and just the music I like - "pumpy" house. Tunes that “grab you by the scrotum” as my dear friend Ken would say. I'm not one for girly fluff. Well, apart from "I'd Rather Jack" by The Reynolds Girls which the best tune of all time EVER. Fact. Special thanks to the ever so lovely Wayne G who helped out with a couple of tunes and I blatantly nicked a mix from. Sorry Wayne

P.S. I just remembered, I’ve also been ask to have a go at writing a theme tune for a major new Sci-fi show. This is just a very bizarre year….

KBeard (Terrorist) - Manchester, UK

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=604003723&ref=ts
http://www.myspace.com/thebeardsuk

Kev Rolfe (aka Kbeard) has been involved in Djing & Club Promotion since he was 19yrs old and started his first night ‘Tighten Up!’ at The London Apprentice (now Club333) where he was the sole Dj and organiser.

Kbeards Manchester career started over 9yrs ago when he asked to join in the shaping of legendary club night Homo Electric as it moved from venue to venue and settled in its spiritual home of Legends; a mouldy basement labyrinth with 4 rooms each playing different music....all that was needed was a bit of decor. No flash lightrigs needed...just quality records and passion.

Kbeard was given a own room for his own needs...playing electronica and anything else that was unheard...putting on live electronic acts, performance, solo artists and showing never seen underground films.

Along with his partner (together known as The Beards) they began attending events that took their interest and became prominent figures on Manchesters music and arts scene...events like the International Doodlebug Day, Futuresonic Festival & Great British Bear Bash, events in which they organised a part of the event to showcase up and coming talent relevant to each event; they also took part in an installation piece for the Comme Ca Gallery in Manchester.

KBeard was asked by Bear Mafia to design a range of t-shirts and sent them a series of exclusive designs including the Bear Hug t-shirt and the notorious pink cock t-shirt based on Vivienne Westwood's seminal Seditionaries range (meaning the necessity to seduce people into revolt).

KBeard is a poet in print and has work published in over 41 books.

The Beards have taken part in an exhibition based in Barcelona at the Mercado Gallery.

Kev has been playing laptop sets tailor-made for whatever club he played, and has Djed in Barcelona (headlining the opening party at Bearcalona.06),Rome(RadioDD Festival) and Milan(Pornflakes Queer Crew Party) where he did a live Dj and art set with his partner, as well as gigs around Manchester and the Uk.

So far KBeard has earned praise from the Manchester press who describe him as 'able to shift effortlessly from glitchy electronica to sci-fi soul and to the rawest electro (while remaining crowd pleasingly accessible), its indeed a sound to behold' and 'whether it be the genre-bending Dj sets he plays in and around the city pulling in non-scene influences ranging from electronica to northern soul, he’s prolific and unconstrained by other people's expectations'...together with his partner they have also been refered to as 'Manchesters anti-heroes'.

Kev was signed to LA based experimental label Dragons Eye Recordings & Berlin’s CrippleDickHotWax.The music on these labels is a complete departure to the work, art & Djing sound K Beard is associated with; in 2008 KBeard contributed 4 tracks to the soundtrack of Bruce Labruce’s ‘Otto: Or, Up With Dead People’ which was released in late 2008.

Kbeard has had articles in Manchester Evening News, Metro, City Life, EuroPride Magazine, OutNorthWest Magazine and Attitude Magazine to name but a few.

Kbeard is now involved in the music/performance/visual night Terrorist.
